Whether you want to paint or stain your wooden deck, proper preparation is essential for a quality and long-lasting result. Discover our deck prepation tips to protect your wood deck effectively.

How to know when it’s time to stain or paint your deck?

Is the exterior coating of your deck peeling? Is there mould? Is the surface worn or discoloured? If so, it’s time to give it a little makeover.

Don’t skip any steps. Most deck coating problems result from inadequate preparation or application at an inappropriate time.

Should you choose paint or stain for your deck?

Paint or stain? Paint offers thicker protection but hides the wood grain. Stain, on the other hand, allows the wood to breathe and wears more evenly. Different types of stain exist, like oil-based stains and water-based stains.

What is the lifespan of a deck coating?

A semitransparent stain lasts about 2 to 3 years. In contrast, an opaque paint can protect the wood for 5 to 10 years if well maintained. This depends on several factors, including orientation, usage, and the severity of weather conditions.

What is the ideal temperature for staining your deck or painting your patio?

Choose a cloudy day, especially if your deck is exposed to the sun.

  • Avoid painting or staining in hot or sunny weather. This affects the product’s adhesion and colour uniformity.

  • The ambient temperature should be between 10°C (50°F) and 32°C (90°F) for 24 hours.

  • Ensure the relative humidity is between 40% and 70%. Too high a rate can alter the gloss and drying time.

In short, check the weather conditions carefully. Do not start this work if rain, dew, or frost is expected in the next three days.

Finally, the wood itself must be completely dry. Wait 2 to 3 days after a rainy day. Its moisture content, verifiable with a hygrometer, should not exceed 15%.

Preparing your wood surface

  • Thoroughly clean the wood deck surface. Use a pressure washer or a wood cleaning solution sold at hardware stores or big-box stores.

  • Remove dirt, stones, gravel, and sand.

  • If the wood is stained, dirty, peeling, or damaged, address these issues first. If there is mould, treat it before applying the product.

  • Replace broken or mouldy boards.

  • If necessary, use cleaning, reviving, regenerating, or stripping products. Inquire about their usefulness from your retailer and learn about the necessary preparation before doing the work.

Can you stain or paint over an existing coating?

Brush and stain are ready for application to the deck wood.
You can paint over a stained surface, but not the other way around, at least not without proper sanding. Two options are available to check the potential adhesion of the new stain or paint layer.
  • Water drop test: Sprinkle a few drops randomly on different sections of the deck. If the water beads, lightly sand the wood before applying the product. If the water is absorbed, you can apply the paint or stain directly.

  • Tape test: Apply a new coat on a small, inconspicuous section and let it dry for 24 hours. Press the end of a piece of tape on the covered surface before removing it with a quick, sharp motion. If the paint or stain adheres to the tape, you will need to strip or sand the surface.

A primer may be necessary in some cases. Seek advice from a paint specialist. They can also help you choose paint or stain and accessories.

The right tools for staining or painting your deck

A brush is ideal for applying the product. Use a natural bristle brush for oil-based products and a nylon brush for acrylic products. You can also use paint rollers, but don’t forget to go over it with a brush for good product penetration.

Apply a coat on all surfaces, including the ends of the wood. This prevents moisture from seeping in. To reduce overlap marks, apply the product in the direction of the wood grain and cover each board well.

Let it dry for 48 hours before walking on it. Wait 30 days before washing the deck to allow the coating to harden properly.

Ensuring uniform colour when changing cans

If you need more than one can of paint or stain, make sure they come from the same batch.

Tip: To achieve a uniform colour, pour the new product with the remaining old one (about ¼) and mix well. Stir the product regularly during application.

The importance of maintaining your deck annually

Good annual deck maintenance prevents heavier work. Clean your deck in the spring and fall with a soft brush and mild soap. Avoid pressure washers, which can damage the wood.

Grant your deck a new life

By following these tips, you will extend the life of your deck while restoring its shine. Good maintenance protects the wood and enhances the appearance of your outdoor space. Ready to take action? Check the weather and choose the right tools for painting your deck to achieve a lasting result!
