Selling or repairing your car is a question that comes up often, sometimes after a simple visit to the mechanic or an automotive inspection centre. Yet, certain repairs can allow you to keep a vehicle on the road for many more years. Sell or repair? Our experts guide you in making the most advantageous decision.

Start with a vehicle inspection at the garage

Before deciding whether to sell or repair, have your vehicle undergo a detailed inspection. This will give you a clear picture of its condition, wear and tear, and the profitability of the repairs being considered.

You can have your car inspected at an authorized CAA-Quebec Authorized Vehicle Inspection Centre. Members enjoy a discount.

When is repairing your car the better option?

Repairing your vehicle may be a smart choice if it:

  • has never been seriously damaged in an accident and has always proven reliable;
  • has been well maintained. The engine, transmission, structure, bodywork, suspension and brakes are still in good condition;
  • still meets your needs;
  • has reasonable car mileage, with fewer than; and
  • is fully paid off and you do not want to take on high monthly payments for a new vehicle.

Investing in an older car can therefore be worthwhile if the repairs truly extend its lifespan without exceeding its value.

Is it worth repairing a car with 200,000km?

Yes, in some cases. Modern vehicles often have a lifespan of around 300,000km and sometimes more. Most importantly, mileage alone is not enough to decide. Only a comprehensive assessment can determine whether repairs are cost-effective.

When is it better to sell your vehicle?

If upcoming costs exceed the car’s value or if the required investment is no longer justified, it may be time to sell.

Consider selling your car if:

  • the interior or bodywork is falling apart, or rust is affecting major structural components;
  • you are planning to buy new tires or carry out major automotive repairs, such as on the engine or transmission;
  • you travel frequently or drive long distances far from home;
  • you want features that are not available on your older car, such as automatic emergency braking and advanced safety features; and
  • the peace of mind offered by a new car is important to you.

Should you make repairs before selling your car?

Yes, in some cases. Even if you are planning to sell your vehicle, certain basic repairs can increase its current market value, improve the sale price, and make the transaction easier.

Expert’s insight

“A good compromise is to address the most urgent issues to give yourself time to decide whether it is time to sell. Some signs of wear are telling and may indicate that the vehicle is nearing the end of its useful life.”

Who might want to buy a vehicle that needs major repairs?

DIYers, amateur mechanics or body shop professionals may be interested in buying used vehicles that require significant repairs. If you are thinking of selling your used car yourself, see our advice on setting the price, having it inspected, and preparing for a used car sale.

What is the real resale value of your car?

From the moment it leaves the dealership parking lot, a new car loses value:

  • 20% of its value in the first year;
  • 50% after three years.

Depreciation is often overlooked when calculating annual costs, even though it is a key factor. After that, the depreciation curve slows down and varies by brand and model. Knowing your vehicle’s value before deciding whether to sell or repair remains essential.

If you decide to sell, obtain a list price to help determine your selling price.

How do you know when your car should be scrapped?

Scrapping your vehicle through the SAAQ should be considered when repair costs exceed its value, for example in the case of major mechanical failure or a total loss following an accident.
